Derrick has shown remarkable versatility and adaptability throughout his career, taking on various roles such as Business Analyst, Project Manager, and Director within the Office of Emergency Management (OEM). Additionally, he serves as an adjunct professor, teaching courses in Emergency Management, Criminal Justice, and Educational Success. He is also a certified Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) instructor.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Religion focusing on Christianity and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice.
